Non OHIP services
What are non OHIP Services?
What are “non-OHIP” covered services or “uninsured services”?
Non-OHIP services in Ontario — also known as uninsured services or third-party services — refer to medical or administrative tasks that aren’t covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) because they’re considered non-essential or not medically necessary. These services may include doctor’s notes for work or school (sick notes), insurance and legal form completion, cosmetic treatments, travel health consultations, and fees for missed appointments. Since OHIP does not reimburse these costs, they are billed directly to the patient.
Why are patients charged for these services?
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers most medically necessary services provided by physicians. However, some services fall outside OHIP coverage — these are known as uninsured or non-OHIP services. When a service isn’t covered by OHIP or another insurance provider, your physician will request payment directly from you. Patients are responsible for covering the cost of these uninsured services.
How are fees for uninsured services set?
Fees for uninsured services are determined based on the Ontario Medical Association (OMA)’s recommended rates, as outlined in the latest edition of the OMA Physician’s Guide to Third Party and Other Uninsured Services. This ensures the fees reflect current professional guidelines and fair market value.
